How to get more followers on instagram
A couple of months ago I wrote about a new side hustle I was starting to grow an Instagram account and eventually monetize it through shoutouts and sponsored posts.
In that post I laid out the tactics I used to build my Instagram follower count from 0 to 1,000 in 30 days. Here's a graph showing the follower count on that Instagram account over time:
You can see the first phase where I was really motivated and constantly posting content so my follower count grew pretty quickly.
After that I lost motivation and it became harder and harder to get followers.
The issue I had with this account is that I only posted funny pictures/memes which meant I was in a pretty competitive niche and I had to constantly find original, new content.
If you're posting old, rehashed content, it's likely that your followers will have seen it before and you'll get lower engagement or people will stop following your account altogether.

New instagram account & new strategy for growth
I detailed in a post last week my new side hustle which is going to be my #1 focus for the next 6 months; growing an authority website to make money via affiliate commissions through Amazon and some other sites.
I've learned some lessons from my last Instagram account and I've decided that I'm not going to spend as much time finding original content. I used to spend around an hour per day scrolling through Imgur and Reddit to find funny pictures to post and after a while it got really old. I'm convinced this actually turns your brain to mush after just looking at stupid memes all day.
My authority site is in the outdoor niche so my Instagram account only posts beautiful outdoor pictures of landscapes, mountains, oceans, and anything generally related to nature.
My content sourcing strategy is very simple, but slightly unethical. I look for trending pictures, download them, and repost them with my own hashtags and a link to my Instagram account to get more followers.
This account is only 7 days old but I've had some really great growth with this strategy. I get about 3-5 followers every time I post a photo and that number is growing as my follower count grows. Instagram seems to favor accounts that have an established following so I think my growth will continue to creep upwards as success breeds more success.
Here's a graph showing my follower account so far as well as the number of posts I've made. You can see I've posted a ton of content but that's because it's so easy to do now. All I have to do is find a picture I like, hit the "copy share link" and my phone downloads the photo so I can post it. The whole process takes about 10 seconds and almost no effort.
How to download instagram photos to repost
Downloading photos from Instagram is really easy. All you need to do is go to the App Store or Google Play Store and search for "Instagram downloader". Most of the apps are the same and they all work in the same way.
Find an Instagram photo you want to download and in the top right corner above the photo you'll see 3 dots. Tap on those dots and click "Copy Link". The app you're using to download the photos will probably give you a notification about the image being successfully saved.
Then all you have to do is hit the "+" sign at the bottom of the Instagram app and post the photo like normal.
how to get more followers with every post
Having the right hashtags and the right call to action is super important to grow your follower count.
First, the hashtags. This is how people who don't follow you discover your account.
The analytics on my Instagram account show that about 50-75% of the likes I get on any photo I post are from people who are not following me. This means I'm getting a ton of organic exposure from the Instagram algorithm thanks to my hashtag selection.
The best way to find hashtags is to just find photos you like and see what hashtags those accounts are using.
Copy those hashtags down to a Google doc and keep building them up. Once you get about 15-20 hashtags just copy and paste them into each Instagram post so you can get exposure.
The next important part is a call to action. Your goal when you post on Instagram isn't to just get likes. What you really want is followers. Having a lot of followers is how you get sponsored posts and actually monetize your account.
I've tested out a few different strategies and I've gotten the best results with just posting my Instagram name and some emojis next to it.
Instagram cuts off a lot of the text you post on a photo so that people don't have to scroll through huge walls of hashtags. This means you absolutely need to post your Instagram name up front (like @jim) so people will see it.
This gets people to click on your name which takes them to your account profile and hopefully gets them to follow you. On posts where I leave my account name off, I usually don't get any followers, maybe 1 here or there.
On posts that have my name up front I get 3-5 followers within the first hour of the post going live.
Plans for my new instagram account
The most important thing when thinking about growing an Instagram account is to realize that this is a long game. You need to have a process to growing your account that you will be OK with doing for at least 6-12 months.
For now my motivation to grow my account has two pieces.
The first piece is to drive traffic to my authority website. I have a link to my website right in the bio of my Instagram account so every person who clicks on my account will see my website and can click over to check it out if they'd like.
So far I've gotten about 5-10 clicks to the website which is small but expected for a new account. As my follower count grows, Instagram will start to contribute more and more traffic.
This will also allow me to directly monetize my Instagram followers through Amazon affiliates. If I can get people to click to my bio, go to my website, and click on any affiliate links, I'll make money on any purchases they make on Amazon in the following 24 hours.
Eventually if my follower account gets high enough I'll be able to sell sponsored posts and shout outs which can be insanely profitable.
Large Instagram accounts can easily make $10k+ per month so there's a nice pot of gold at the end of the Instagram rainbow. Getting there is not easy but unlike my old Instagram account, I'm not doing this solely for lucrative sponsored posts. Getting traffic to my site along the way will help keep my motivation up and make it more likely I'll stick with this Instagram account.
